New Show Alert: “Maui Fever”
It’s January. It’s cold and rainy/snowy/windy and basically all I want is a tropical vacation, a tan and unlimited mai tais. Or I could take the next best thing - MTV’s new show Maui Fever.
Basically it’s Laguna Beach sans Gucci shoes and Prada bags. Oh yeah, and it’s in Hawaii.
We first reported about the show back in August. Not to say we’re know-it-alls, I swear. But we now have all of the deets courtesy of the MTV press release. We’re introduced us to a surprising cast of (gasp!) attractive young people who like to party and like drama even more. Of course, MTV expressed it a little differently:
Maui Fever explores the lives of several young Kaanapali, Maui locals navigating their way through life on the small island, juggling the revolving door of tourists while trying to maintain stable relationships and establish what they want for their future. The constant threat of temptation causes waves for Cheyne, Chante, Anthony, Anna, Corbin, Sean and Jesse who are just trying to make a good time out of life.
Meet the cast after the jump…
Cheyne is all things you’d expect a top pro surfer to be: a party-all-night, funny, outgoing, handsome guy. As the most popular guy in Kaanapali and the son of professional skateboarder Tony Magnuson, will his relationship with girlfriend Rachael survive his attraction to his ex, Anna?
With no goals and no girlfriend, Corbin is the kind of guy who cant take anything or anyone too seriously. Pinned the clown of his social group, Corbin seems to be everyones pal in Kaanapali while perpetually cracking jokes.
Notorious for being the center of attention, Chaunte is sure to stir up the drama wherever she goes. She likes to keep her on-and-off boyfriend Anthony in the palm of her hand while she keeps her eyes open for other love interests.
She’s Chauntes partner in crime and roommate. They even work together as hostesses at a restaurant. And like Chaunte, Anna relishes the attention the attention of boys, especially one boy in particular, ex-boyfriend Cheyne. Since Cheyne started dating Rachael, he and Anna have remained close, much to Rachaels dismay. Cheyne and Annas attraction is palpable and it gets the best of them.
Quiet and shy, Anthony is hanging on tight to his relationship with Chaunte. While Chaunte insists they remain just friends, Anthony is incapable of making a decision without her, and unable to see her flirty and manipulative ways. How long until Anthony catches on and cuts all ties?
Sean is what one would call the Kaanapali player. Not your normal one-night-stand player, he often dips into the constant flow of tourists to find his love du jour. Will this spontaneous waiter ever settle down?
The new guy in town, Jesse has already moved in with best bud Corbin and become part of the in crowd. Still Jesse often feels like an outsider and finds himself breaking the number one rule in Kaanapali: dont fall for tourists.
I actually feel a little queasy after reading that. It’s kind of like I’m 12 and reading Sweet Valley High all over again. Maybe I’ll stick to winter and slather on some sunless tanner, mix up a batch of pina coladas in the blender and call it a day.
I may not be watching, but will you?

I will definatly NOT be watching. What pisses me off is that the world is going to see this show and think that this is what Hawai’i is about stupid white kids and their drama. If they are going to come to Hawai’i make it about Hawai’i and the Hawaiians and polynesians! Other wise stay on your own land.

This show sucks big time, previews are all of white people and drama just like Laguna Beach. You might as well make it Miami Fever and film it in Florida. Why even bother in Hawaii if you’re not going to have a little ethnic mix thrown in? Having a little color in the mix won’t hurt MTV you know.

Wow,
This has really hit a hot button on the local kids. Some claim to be Hawaiian but, judging from their comments on other blogs they have never attended Kamehameha and are more than likely hot heads who have lived here less than the kids on this show.
More likely they have dark skin, are not of Hawaiian ancestry and have other issues that make them racists and angry.
I have known many Kanaka Maoli and they are angry with the government and policy, not with their fellow islanders.
Many Haole, which means,” without breath” due to their pale skin, not as some think, foreigner, are productive defenders of the aina. More so then the people who throw their trash on the road and leave their derelect vehicles on the road.
Yes, you can tell this poster to “To back to the mainland but, my Haole family has lived here generations, probably longer than most of the locals posting angry comments about this stupid show..

just watched the preview on mtv today and all i have to say is that this is some whack sh-t! apparently the producers of this show as well as mtv was neither interested nor concerned with producing a more realistic potrayal of maui. instead they opted for an all white and unattractive laguna beach-esque cast that just doesn’t make the grade. two big thumbs down.
half native half transplant
Jan 17, 2007 at 10:39 pm
damn, thats the reality of maui. building more luxury homes and attracting more transplants. at least they still have their roots reggae music. pretty much the only time i see local hawaiian kids together there. otherwise it is a pretty uphill battle. kauai is worse though.

these is just another show to replace laguna beach, cause people lost interest in it & the characters. i agree with a lot of the people here. if they are going to do a show in hawaii at least include culture.. not a bunch of white, richy snob teens. granted its great for mtv cause like laguna will attract many people cause god knows why people are drawn to watch a bunch of snobby rich kids that dont realize how good they have it. my boyfriend & his family are from hawaii & i absolutly lllooove to hear the stories of back home. i’m sure if mtv actually included culture in the show, that they would lose some viewers of the show but would gain a whole new audiance that has never watched mtv that much before. who knows.. i dont believe its a show to offend, cause mtv is not trying to show what hawaii’s culture is about, they are just trying to replace laguna cause people were obsessed with that show & after awhile people lost interest cause face it a show like that can only last a couple years before it gets boring..same shit, different episode. just like maui fever. it wont last long.

i was just in maui two weeks ago and the portrayal of how the people talk and the general feel of the island is right on. that’s a hawai’ian accent…also not all of these kids look very rich i must say, some of their places aren’t the palaces many of maui’s upper class live in…i don’t understand why people are so pissed about the lack of culture…did you ever learn a single thing about the history/culture of laguna beach from that show? i miss hawai’i, the road to hana is the most beautiful thing you will ever see

the song at the end of the show is “Too Much” by Pepper. sucks that it takes this gay show for MTV to play their song, but ainokea. us locals know that this isn’t the real hawaii and that’s all that matters. just like when had the earthquake, we just kept living the island life with no worries, the mainlanders was more worried then we was! but anyways, please buy Peppers cd, don’t go around downloading it. they’ve been out for awhile and listen to more of their songs. their hometown hero’s from bigisland, Hawaii from Kona.

It amazes me how completely disgusting Maui Fever is. It’s as simple as that. That ignorant reality show has caused such an uproar here on the island and I totally understand why. It’s not a racial issue like some may think, but more of a portrayal issue. Local people will represent Maui to the fullest and when a show like Maui Fever airs, it’s disappointing. No culture at all. People don’t understand that we live so much differently here on Maui and even Hawaii as a whole. It might not be a better way of living, but let me tell you it’s down right entertaining. The portrayal of Maui in Maui Fever is so ignorant! A bunch of caucasion kids who do stupid crap is not what local people want to be connected to at all! I guess some people just don’t get it. I work in the tourism industry and I meet tourists everyday that still think we live in damn grass shacks! MTV should make a show about the real life on Maui. Do casting on Maui with real local people. I know so much people that would love to be apart of a reality series! I see so many comments about the hot guys on the show, but they obviously have not experienced a real local boy! Haha! Nah, just thought I’d include that. Anyway, I do realize that everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. MTV and people from other places just need to understand that Maui Fever is basically crap. Now why don’t we do something a little more original? Why are you going to make a similar show to Laguna Beach? Next time you do something like that, just keep it simple and stay out of Hawaii because it’s embarassing.

Firstly let me say again that maui fever is a stupid and disgraceful show. Also, to everyone in here that keeps saying “its just a tv show get over it”. Well you obviously do not understand the life and culture in Hawaii. We do not want to be affiliated in any way to such disgraceful behavior that was portrayed on that show. When something deals with Hawaii it is personal to the true locals of Hawaii. And for those of you who said “the portrayal of how the people talk and the general feel of the island is right on” then you ovbiously do not understand or had even experienced the life of the land. The injustice and outrage that we feel does not only come from the pathetic attempt to portray Hawaii in any way, but the fact is that the cast doesn’t even understand Hawaii either. The most Hawaiian thing in that distatseful display of the Hawaiian culture is the location. I am tired of people telling me to “relaxe” “get over it” and “move on” because honestly to move on there needs to be some type of closure. How can anyone “move on” when our reputation is being slandered. In the work place when local Hawaiian people move to the states we are automatically labeled as racist, ignorant, lazy, and other negative concepts because of these shows in which you are telling us to “get over.” Futhermore, this show is no where near to portraying locals regardless of race. Locals can be by birh be Caucasion, African American, Native American, Asian or whatever the case may be and still be true locals. The true locals of Hawaii understand that concept. But what causes outrage is that Hawaii once again is being stepped on and kicked to the side. Except that this time it’s on our own aina. If MTV wants to attempt to replace their sorry excuse of a show Laguna Beach that provides drama I can find in my own classes at school then let them pick on another state because the people of Hawaii are tired of being portrayed as ignorant perverts and whores. Mahalo nui loa for your time. Aloha

My mom was excited to see a show about Maui. She called me ten minutes into the show from the mainland with a burdened heart. “I turned it off because my heart was hurt by the way they portrayed Maui and the kids”
My own heart is sad for my friends. Not much about the show is real. My hope is that this fake reality show gets canceled.

I like this show. Just because they don’t feature the Hawaiian community in a favorable way to most locals, those “Haoles” were all born and raised in Hawaii and deserve the same respect as every other Hawaiian. There are native Hawaiian teenagers that have drama to, just because these kids are white doesn’t make it any different….People always have to bring up race. By the way, Laguna Beach isn’t really the way they put it on the show, it’s a relaxed little surf town, but blinged out. If the shows bug you so much, then don’t watch them, they’re for entertainment purposes only, and it’s fun to live the island party life through them for a lot of mainland kids. So get of your “Locals Only” high horse bullshit and get on with your lives rather than complain about everything. I wouldn’t complain if my hometown was shown on mtv, actually it would be pretty cool, so S.T.F.U. to all the haters out there

HAOLE WAHINE OF A REAL MAUI BOY
Feb 2, 2007 at 8:17 am
Hi. I am a haole who grew up in the Midwest and lived there for 22 years (very white where i lived) When I moved away I married a local kine Maui boy and he schooled me on the real Hawaii. What Ive seen first hand is nothing like what the television show portrays. Yes, the place is beautiful and people hook up there (like anywhere else on the planet) but this is NOT what the whole island is about. A show that gets attention on such a large scale should be creating a show that is not only entertaining, but representative of the local MIX. I know it needs to be entertaining to get ratings, or why do the show in the first place, but asking it to be a representative depiction isnt too much to ask, right? Thats all the locals are asking for! (example- besides a lack of realistic racial representation, looks were lacking in the cast) Its like a slap in the face to all of the real locals. Please cancel this show and slander someone else!!!!!!

My Haole boys grew up on Maui and after hanging with the one of my boys over Christmas, I saw plenty of these same kinds of characters on Maui. It’s just one side of Maui, but it does exist the same as a back yard party happens all the time. It ould be great if people produced all kinds of show that really represent Maui’s diverse cultures.

Surfergirl I didn’t bother to read the rest of your post after I came across yor first false assertion. According to a Maui newspaper NONE of the cast was born in Hawai’i (MTV claims Anthony was, but regardless the majority are all recent transplants). Also, d2mk3, Hawaiian is an English word so you don’t insert an okina.

I was not born in Hawaii nor have I been to Hawaii and the show makes me sick. The only good think I can see about it is does show my teenage daughter what guys really think. It disgusted me to see the characters boast about hooking up with tourists, but it was a good dose of reality I could never teach my daughter myself.
I do hope to visit Hawaii in the near future and I would never go to see if this bunch of MTV drama crap exists. I would go to see the local people, culture and beauty.
Kimo
Feb 4, 2007 at 12:35 pm
The truth is that drama exists everywhere. The faces may change, the skin may change, but both the beauty and the ugliness in this world live side by side. We generally see what want to see. You can get hooked up at Kaaapali or beat up in Paia by those that are of the culture. Good and evil is and always will be part of our world. What you see, participate in or choose to ignore changes your perspective and life, but the reality of it is that life will still happen and evolve whether you impose your will on others or not. I find most things on TV worthless and choose not to watch. Instead of loving to hate something, maybe just choose not to watch it. As far as others, you can’t control their minds, kids included. You can influence them through your own actions and hope that they in turn use what they learned. Life is one long lesson.

MTV took what could have been a prime opportunity and wasted it on silly juvenilistic teenage crap. Don’t come back, you’re not welcome anymore. We gave them tax breaks to lure them here and this is the payback? Embarassing kiddie schlock. Oof.

okay people that are posting stuff on here, its not about how maui is portrayed, its about the cast and how they live there lives.
mtv is not saying that all people from maui are hoes. its just the cast. i mean come on. if it was about like the actual culture it would say stuff about maui and stuff not about a few cast members and what they do with their spare time. and just cause their white doesnt mean that they arent from hawaii, they could have been born there and same with other generations

one thing i have to say.I lived in honalulu on and off for three years and i do know the hawaiians are very family orientated and care very much for the islands and surrounding one’s.What i seen on the show was mainlanders tryin to be hawaiian. In my mind,i really understand were the anger is coming from.Just my 2 sence

I’m pretty sure that most of the people who watch the show are either in it for the guys, the girls, or the drama..Just because MTV films in Maui doesnt mean that they are trying to show the viewers what its like to live in Maui as a whole, they are just filming the lives of a few people who just so happen to live in Maui
