okay, here it goes. maui fever is the most FALSE show i have ever seen that represents the maui culture. PLEASE, if you are planning on making a show reppin` one island of the hawaii chain; i suggest you put some real people in it. telling the truth, MAUI FEVER IS NOTHING BUT LIES MAKING MAUI SEEM LIKE HOOK UP PARADISE! that degrades us! YOU KNOW WHAT, that show is hated ALL OVER MAUI. i’d cancel it, before you get riots at tv spots. this isnt a threat, im serious. locals are pissed at the falseness of that show. maui fever, is FALSE & is causing rage all over the islands; REALITY MTV, i believe you guys need a reality check. WE HATE YOU! we are tired of you guys labeling us as hook up isle & paradise. geeze, get it through your head at look closely at your show. you know what all of us see, NOTHING. NOTHING BUT TOURIST; there are no locals. quite frankly, are youg guys racist? you’re causing a pissed off up roar here beause of the shows.

As soon as I saw the commercials on t.v. about the show i knew it was going to be fake..Are you kidding me? If you guys are going 2 make a show in hawaii and claim it real…then make it real..That’s not how it really is in hawaii..It’s rude and disrespectful to go there and just show white people. I probably saw 1 non white person on the show and the whole damn island is full of them… I can tell you this much, if the show gets good ratings its probably because of the scenery. Checkout myspace because there’s something going around about the show, and it aint good. I can’t hate on the actors and actresses in it because they’re just claiming their 15 minutes of fame, and money…Just tell them to move that stuff some where else, cali perhaps, laguna beach. lol…

this show is completely false…being a local hawaiian girl this show portrays all of us as party all da time kids and we work at hotels for money and do nothing but sit and surf and soak all day…. but the biggest difference is that the main characters are haoles…. im not saying that there are no haoles that arent really locals cuz there are….im jus saying that im sick of stereo types saying that the hawaiian islands and their people are nothing but good for party paradise … i believe that’s the main reason why we are looked down on other states… i’ve been to the mainland and been asked numerous questions like do u still live in grass huts?, do u surf to skoo?.. and do u guys have electricity there..?….. every year i hear those stupid questions and i get mad…. thats why wen ppl find out we are from hawaii we are looked down at and arent acknowledged for our academic and other accomplishments…. all i know is that everyone here in the hawaiian islands are not fans of this show..and if u look at it… it’s named after us “mau’i fever”…yet we are ashamed of it….

I CAN NOT BELIEVE THE BULL THEY PUT ON MAUI FEVER. I AM HAWAIIAN & I AM BORN AND RAISED ON MAUI. THEY OFFEND HAWAI`I AND MY WAY OF LIFE AND SO MANY OTHERS. THE MAUI I KNOW IS FULL OF MIXED RACES. THE LOCALS I KNOW WOULD NOT BE DUMB ENOUGH TO PROMOTE MAUI THIS WAY. OUR CULTURE IS SO MUCH MORE THAN PARTIES AND SEX. IF MTV CANNOT SEE THIS THEN THERE IS SOMETHING REALLY WRONG W/ THEM. IT IS A SHAME THAT THOSE SEVEN YOUNG ADULTS DON’T SEE ANYTHING WRONG ABOUT IT EITHER.ANOTHER THING TAHT PISSES ME OFF IS PROMOTING THE SHOW AS “MTV GOES HAWAIIAN” WHATS THAT?? YOU CAN’T JUST BECOME HAWAIIAN. AND FROM THE LOOKS OF IT THERE ARE NO HAWAIIANS ON MAUI FEVER.I THINK THIS SHOW SHOULD BE CANCELED. THERE IS A PETITON GOING AROUND ON MYSPACE SO IF ANY ONE AGREES WLTH ME AND SO MANY OTHERS PLEASE SIGN….

Haoles may live here but they arent truely accepted by us until they show some aloha and desire to blend into asian and polynesian culture…mainland attitudes like those found in Laguna Beach are best kept on the mainland. In hawaii, we have aloha and we keep it reserved for those that deserve it. Haoles who act like they are better than others, only remind us of the haoles who came here and took our queen and took our land so many years ago…next time you want to exploit hawaii for your own profit, hire extra security because the locals arent going to stand for it.

“Haoles who act like they are better than others, only remind us of the haoles who came here and took our queen and took our land so many years ago.”

-OK, I don’t exactly love these people on this show but here are some facts.

The truth is when Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown by a group of Native Hawaiians in 1893, none of her subjects cared enough to fire a shot in her defense.

Native Hawaiians then had 66 years to remedy the issue. After deciding they didn’t want a Kingdom, in 1959 Native Hawaiians voted overwhelmingly to become part of the United States. This vote resolved once and for all the will of the Hawaiian people and whether Hawaii was stolen. Anyone who believes otherwise needs to lookup the official state tally for the vote on June 27, 1959 when 94% of Hawaiians voted to relinquish all land claims (proposition 2) to the United States and become the 50th state.

I AM USING THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
as you might have read from the previous comments expressed, the HAWAIIAINS and LOCALS are beginning to start a riot. i attend school here on MAUI and a lot of students are starting to complain and ask if there’s a petition we area able to sign.
now finding this site, i told the students at my high school about it and told them to write a comment.
this show is NOT, i repeat, NOT the reality of living here on MAUI. MTV, did it ever occur to you that the LOCALS on this island do NOT agree to the way the show is being runned? we don’t appreciate it when these damn haoule’s are making there own “laguna beach” here on MAUI. us local’s are not like this. i would definatley have to say NO to the show. WE HATE IT!

  • Daniel

The stupid producer claims that MTV couldn’t find any “real” locals who were willing to act like a bunch of whores and dorks on TV; so, they ended up with those misfits on the current cast. Well, one positive thing out of this whole stinking mess is that it shows great class on the part of the locals in refusing to participate in the sleezy, trashy, materialistic message that MTV is spreading. Let the haoles be haoles; as long as it is made clear that they are in no way represent the actual people who live there.

I am born and raised….not Hawaiin by blood but believe in the Hawaiian culture. This is not a REALITY show of Real Maui. Come on…. REALITY… REALITY…. did you do your homework here…. the culture, the Natives, the struggles that we encounter on a daily basis????!!!!! Try getting your facts toghether instead of making a quick buck that in no way goes back to our community…. COMMUNITY, thats what most of us live for and in. Best you take this off the air…. or we will petition to have our local cable company take MTV out of our Hawaiian Islands! Mahalo for the Locals the REAL LOCALS lets see this get CXLD IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!

This show is so fake…it does not belong on “reality tv.” I am Hawaiian, grew up and raised in Hawaii, and this is not what real Hawaii is all about…its not about stupid slutty haoles chicks who make like they own Hawaii…Hawaii is rich in culture and contains so many unique characteristics that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. MTV’s version of Hawaii just shows dumb girls that you can find in the mainland and shows nothing different from any other place you would go to…this show is a disgrace and seriously needs to be taken off MTV.

Maui fever is not only a disgrace to Maui, but the state of Hawaii as a whole. The show personifies the local people of Hawaii as shallow drama queens and perverts. This show does not in any way portray life in Hawaii. I also want to pose a question, not wanting to sound racist, but when there is a movie or show that suppose to portray life in Hawaii why is there no local people? And when there are those rare occasions a local person does make an appearance why are the local people the ones portrayed as arrogant, ignorant, and stuck up? Why are the main characters or the protaganist of the storyline usually a caucasion male or female when the majority of Hawaii’s population is part asain, filipino, or some type of polynesian. Yet in the streamline of todays media when Hawaii is portrayed it basically seems like the characters are and should be based in California, and not in Hawaii. In these “reality” shows or even movies based in Hawaii or about the culture in Hawaii why can’t there be local actors who actually know and understand the life that we the people of Hawaii live and understand. This show is absurd, disturbing, infuriating, and most of all shameful towards the people and the culture of Hawaii. The culture that that we try so hard to honor, preserve, and take pride in. Mahalo nui loa for your time Aloha.

I have to agree with everyone else regarding Maui Fever. The show sucks! THe chics think they hot, but they not! Where are the local people? I live on Maui, and I’m not as offended at the fact that they make it seem like the localz are all about scandal and hook ups. I’m offended at the fact that they find the Hawaiian culture so lame that they had the shows auditions in the mainland. I never heard about no open call on Maui for the show!

Words can not express the disgust and embarressment I felt after what little I saw of this show…and I’m not even “born and raised” here. But I’ve got roots that go back to my grandparents. I was curious to see if there were any real locals in the show and saw maybe one. What happened to the “spicy mix of tourists and locals” that Morgan J Freeman said made Mau’i an “ideal setting for the show”? The reason why no “locals” agreed to do the show was probably because of respect and integrity for their home and family. It’s a small island, people. The “locals” know each other like in any small town. Just the thought of the show makes me feel shame. This show does not portray real locals on Mau’i. Why not show the talent(local music and hula), the “aloha spirit”, and the culture that draws so many to this beautiful island? A big ‘A’OLE(NO) to this show!

BEST SHOW EVER - Wow this show is for real, the total story of my life growing up in Hawaii was the best my buddy Scott and I were the Kings of Kaanapali Beach we met so many wonderful girls, had such good times, really brings back wonderful memories, this show is totally acurate they just need a couple of skim boarders…

After reading these posts it’s sad. It’s sad because MTV will not give a crap about what you guys are saying. If the ratings are good for them they will keep the show. Maui Fever is yes ridiculous and thats why people are watching that crap. MTV has stooped low showing guys as airheads, like that one guy that walks around with this butt crack showing all day and the guys just looking for “hot chicks”. If the show is about Maui, where the heck are the locals and natives of Maui?…it’s not really maui then. I feel for you guys and understand what your going through. I’m from Kenya and people think we live in huts and walk around with dry leaves as clothes. Sad to say this but Americans are soo close-minded when seeing the world. And MTV proves this!…I SECOND THE NOTION OF CANCELLING THIS CRAP OF A SHOW!

EVERY DAMN CHARACTER ON MAUI FEVER WAS FLOWN IN FROM SOME OTHER PLACE TO PLAY SOME FAKE CHARACTER.. REAL LOCALS LOOK AT THAT SHOW AND KNOW THAT THOSE HAOLE KIDS WOULDN’T SURVIVE ONE DAY IN REAL ISLAND CULTURE.. ISLAND CULTURE IS ABOUT FAMILY AND RESPECT..ITS A WAY OF LIFE.. AND EVEN IF YOU DID PUT US ON THAT SHOW.. REAL LOCALS KNOW THAT OUR FAMILIES RAISED US BETTER THAN TO ACT LIKE CHEAP CRACK HEADS ON TELEVISION.. CANCEL THE SHOW AND STOP WASTING THE HAIR BLEACH AND FAKE TANNER.. *

MTV has lost their touch. Maui fever is one of the most horrifying shows to this day, and I can’t believe that the MTV network is shocked. It is everything Hawaii is not. We’re not about wanting to have sex with tourists, partying, grumbling about how our “boyfriend” broke up with us, or plastic surgery. We are the melting pot of America. What MTV has done is trecherous, isolating the show to one specific ethnic group (caucasians). If you want to make a show about Hawaii, you need to include Asians, Hispanics, Caucasians, African, and Oceanic people. Hawaii is about individuals coming together to have a good time, and shouldn’t be about worthless, lifeless, dull, inept crap. Instead of showing their side of the story, every side should be showed. Hawaii has always been cast out, and finally, when we have a chance to shine, we look ignorant. It’s another laguna beach, and heaven forbid we have another one of those.

  • rod.96732

And to think that this type of entertainment would be okay for the youth of today. For most people who make MTV, you dont care about what and who these people are, or how we the locals make Maui a beautiful place to live in; MTV is only for money-hungry haoles that are interested in making everything they come across, a part of something they’re already accustomed to. High glitz and glamour. Truly it’s a shame to see the difference compared to the rest of the worlds’ society. Then again, its Haolewood.

Word thats going around is that one of the castmembers, got into a fight westside. braddah was scraped pretty bad. Good for you, young boy. Believe me, from what MTV started, i dont think it’s going to be the end of the poor guys troubles. I can only say the same for the rest of the crew. Poor thing these young kids. bumbye you learn. It’s for the best, for the well being of all things haole, that MTV does the right thing by taking Maui Fever off the air.

Racism is such an ugly thing - and this show should exopose the racism in Hawaii - They should show how white people are bad mouthed and beaten up - they should have an episode on Kill Haole Day so that The Mainland can know how you peole really hate whites - maybe we should take our tourist dollars somewhere else ? The Mainland has no idea how hateful the asians in Hawaii are they think they are Hawaiian when in fact they are really only second or third generation from either the Philipines or some other Asian Influence - and they love to gang up an beat up white kids - growing up in Hawaii the locals never bothered me but I saw alot of white people beaten because of their skin - the world needs to know about Racism in Hawaii. This is America - Get off our beach and go back to Asia if you don’t like it This is America not Hawaii - The Queen is Dead!

white tourist … how can you say that there is “racism” in hawaii. You must be nuts. if you saw people getting beaten up its not because of their color okay. I know a lot of local people say dumb haole but do you even know what that word means? It doesnt mean white. It means foreigner. But the reason why people (not only white people) get beat up its because respect is a big deal in hawaii and if you disrespect a hawaiian or a local kid you will get dirty lickens do not expect a slap on the hand or just getting yelled. You better run if you disrespect. How can you say that there is racism when you yourself had said that “THE LOCALS NEVER BOTHERED YOU!”

Kawehilani - who are you kidding - Hawaii is the MOST racist place in the world, white kids are beaten up every day because of their color - how many times do you hear go home haole - they do not bother the mexicans, the philipinos get no trouble, only the whites - I have seen groups of 7 or more Asians ganging up on one white college kid and beating them senseless - Especially on the Big Island - The Locals never bothered me because I had a great tan and I was respected - the truth is that white people get beat up every day in Hawaii because of their skin - because they stole our land yeah right - You guys give Hawaiians a bad name - most of the real Hawaiians are on Niihau or extinct, soo silly that these Philipinos, Samoans, Japanese, think they are Hawaiian or Local - The world should really know how you feel about Haoles and how you hate white people - The government of The United States should crack down on all of the Phoney Hawaiian Homelands Take back our Lands People for Treason - When Locals go to the Mainland they are treated well, there is a huge contrast to how Haoles are treated in Hawaii - it is called being educated and civilized something lacking in Hawaii -

    Kawehilani -

By the way you are the one that does not know what Haole means - it means Without Breath - the ah - in Aloha - But what most people really think is that it means White Person from The Mainland - that is the common accepted definition - it is just like calling a Black person a Niger - you like to go on and on how it means foreigner come on - It is a derogatory slur against white people !

to WHITE TOURIST! Who the hell you think you are! You say there is totall racism in hawaii and that Haole’s are always targeted because of their skin color??? that is totall bull sh*T. if it was that big of a problem it would be in the news EVERY SINGLE DAY!! But hey its not! I grew up in Maui went through the schools and not once did I see people fighting because of their SKIN COLOR!!! To me WHITE TOURISTS your just as TRASHYY and FULL of SH*T as the show MAUI FEVER!!!! Oh and by the way you cant say im RACIST because guess what BRAH!! Im half hawaiian oh and u guessed…. it half HAOLE tooo. And believe me no matter if your skin is red white or blue if you have ayone has a attiude like yours White Tourists… it qualifies for a good beat down of common sense.

    Feb 6, 2007 at 3:05 pm

Mr Dawg, I’m suprised that you take offense - Since you went to school you should know all about Kill Haole Day usually the last day of school when White Children are targeted and beaten because of their skin color - you refer to yourself as half haole - let me guess that means your half white right? Unlike the other fellow who tried to imply that haole meant foreigner, everyone know that Haole is to a white person as is like calling a Black Person a N*gger it is just as bad and wrong - Mr Dawg you also seem to lack self control calling names - and threatening people with a good beat down - That is the Real Spirit of Hawaii - The spirit of get off my island Haole - The spirit of ganging up on helpless white children - Tell the truth how many white children did you beat up on Kill Haole Day - Mr Dawg why don’t you tell everyone about Wainae on Oahu and how they reccomend White people not to go there because of racism and violence towards white people. Why do the people of Asian Decent in Hawaii like to Beat up White People? Ever hear the phrase get off our Island ? The truth is that Island is The United States of America - Where all men are created equal - You need to practice Love and Aloha - Let go of your hatred of white people…

Remember when I was young spending romantic evenings on Kaanapali Beach when one of the security guards from Whalers Village would come down the beach with his thuglike freinds threatening the young tourists - y girlfreind and I were holding hands watchng the ocean when these guiys came along with the familiar Get of our Beach Brah or else - you like one lickin - That was when I was only 17 - these guys were way into middle age - Hawaii’s Dirty little Secret - most of the locals - asian locals absolutely hate white people - especially the ones that move to Hawaii - they cut in line at the store - they ignore you in restaurants - I’m lucky that as a white youth I had the chance to experience what it was like to be Black in America back in the 1960’s - Racism is wrong - Hawaii should prosecute hate crimes - you never hear about them on the news because they are afraid of scaring away the tourists -

Well mr.white tourist. yes i cannot deny that there are people out there in hawaii that like to start fights and are ignorant but you are generalizing everyone of the state of hawaii to be that way. Thats like me saying all white people are racist because of the racist group called the skinheads or even kkk. When i know not all white people are racist. You are pointing out a few idiots from a whole state and saying we’re all alike. if thats the case then you are just as racist as everyone else. And you cant say ALL locals hate white people or there would be no families that move from the mainland to hawaii in the first place idiot. And you want to correct me on my hawaiian too? first of all haole does mean without breathe … literally … but in the hawaiian culture without breathe means that you are not of the hawaiian heritage … so dont go all high makamaka on me telling me i dont know what im talking about ok. therefore if you are not from hawaii then you are a foreigner. And you want to talk about Waiane. dont even go there. Waiane is not only dangerous for white people ok. Its dangerous for those people that disrespect them. Regardless if your white asian or even hawaiian even if you live on oahu you shouldnt be hanging out there in the first place if you tend to disrespect. You say you know what racism is like hunny. you kno nothing of racism. I went to my cousins place in Texas and you know what tell me when people thrown rocks at your car. Tell me the last time when you were 13 and got jumped by 5 older guys. Or when i was in california, which is supposedly is one of the most welcoming places, Tell me the last time you were pulled off a public trasnportation tell me the last time you and your whole family were not even seated in a restaurant for 4 hours while white families that just walked in were seated. please tell me.ok so do not say that all local people are racist ok. Nana ka maka; ho`olohe ka pepeiao;pa`a ka waha. onipa’a and imua my local people

Wow Mr. Whitey Tourist. If you really want to get so technical u should never call someone just “A Black Person” the correct and polite way is African American. Let me say one more time… African Amercian. Oh and only untill today have i learned of this so called KILL HAOLE DAY! Well where i grew up there is no such thing. Seems to me that you want to revive this special occasion… by having to point it out so many times. Oh and hows you to complain that you got kicked off a beach to watch the ocean. When the natives of Hawaii got kicked off of their lands by the United States of Amercia illegally. And untill this day the US Goverment will still deny what they did is wrong.
Either way there is RACISM everywhere!!! Oh and by the way I never did beat up anybody because of skin color. So why are you going and autmatically LABELING me as someone who does??? Isnt that RACISM right there??? And if its not then please do explain?

It is the melting pot of the world, with many different ethnic groups and an abundance of diverse cultures. In Hawaii its hard to believe that racism does segregate its people. with Maui Fever, it shows how easy one little thing of racial discrimination can affect everyone as a whole and create such a big mess.

    Ku`ia ka hele a ka na`au ha`aha`a.
One last thing - Some of the Wonderful, Kindest People I’ve ever met in my Life were Hawaiian - To be blessed with the opportunity to know such people of high honor was truly a blessing. To learn the true spirit of Aloha - To give without hesitation, with generosity, with love, The best people I have ever met in the world were Hawaiian - They taught me about true Love and Compassion. As a Haole I was accepted by few without regard to the color of my skin, they only took regard to the nature of my heart. My intention was not to generalize the Hawaiian People - only to point out that Racism is very wrong - My deepest sincere apology to anyone that has been offended by these messages. The majority of people though seemed to have deep disregard for anyone not from Hawaii - some they say that they who were not born here or were not of Hawaiian decent do not deserve to live here - Get of our Land -Everyone needs to learn to live together - with Aloha - Some of the best people I have ever met were Hawaiian `A`ohe lokomaika`i i nele i ke pâna`i. Again my apology - my intention was not to generalize all locals - I’m just refering to several painful incidents of racism that I had experienced while living in Hawaii - The only people people that I have disregard for are those who are intolerant of others based upon the color of their skin. RACISM IS WRONG…

Mr Reyes had asked the last time that I was pulled off of public transportation - that would have been while riding the Kaanapali Trolley while stopped at the Lahaina Wharf - The driver who kept a bottle of alcohol stashed - he like to drink and endanger everyones life on the bus, anyway he took it upon himself to throw me off of the bus - for no ther reason than because I was white. The last time I sat for almost an hour without service was while I was on Oahu last month at the Pancake House - I was the only white guy in the place and noone even acknowledged me for an hour - it was obvious that I was not welcome there -

There are many lies about the 1893 Revolution in which the Islands was seized from the Queen by a volunteer army of Hawai‘i residents.

Many revisionists try and blame the United States Government which in fact was not responsible for the overthrow of the Queen -

The United States did not get the lands from Native Hawaiians or from the Monarchy. The transfer of lands was made by the independent, five-year-old Republic that had been fully recognized by the international community. The
Republic Senate, moreover, which by 1898 included mostly Native Hawaiians, voted unanimously for Annexation, approving the transfer of lands to be
held in trust for Hawai‘i residents. The House of the Republic, with a majority of Native Hawaiians, did
not have to act on the proposed treaty, but undoubtedly would have voted the same way.

Those that perpetuate the lies that the land was somehow stolen by the USA are the same ones responsible for RACISM against white people.

They are the ones causing a division among the people.

maui fever has got to be THE worst “reality tv show” that mtv has ever created. it is one of the most racially segregated shows and it is a disgrace that mtv would even consider airing a show like “maui fever.” i mean come on….if u’re going to make a show on hawaii, at least have some DECENT looking people on it. whoever thinks that chantel or whatever her name is, is pretty, then u definitely need to renew ur eyeglass prescription. and i didn’t know that maui’s population consisted of ALL CAUCASIONS. that’s a big no thanks.

ok mr. white tourist. i need to correct you again.
    1. i am not a mister i am a miss. ok.
    2. i do not truly believe the sincereity of your apology. i honestly dont. Your apology ONLY seems sincere. How sincere can one be when you have said you NEVER meant to offend anyone. How can that be when number of times you have accused an entire state as being racist and violent. You have also said “it is called educated and civilized something lacking in Hawaii “., Please tell me HOW IS THAT NOT OFFENSIVE? How can you say you NEVER MEANT to offend ANYONE when you have said “This is America - Get off our beach and go back to Asia if you don’t like it This is America not Hawaii - The Queen is Dead!” How is THAT NOT OFFENSIVE? You are telling the local people to get of the beaches of Hawaii. Where a good amount of them have ancestors that worked and lived off that land. And if you are saying that the beaches of Hawaii is one with the US then therefore the people that are born in the state of Hawaii are US citizens just as much as you are. And yet you refer to the shores of Hawaii as”our beach”. You are making it sound as if the locals of Hawaii are not apart of the US. As if we do not belong in the US. Furthermore, you expect anyone to believe that you are sincere and that you do have the love of the people of hawaii that did not treat you wrong except that You are telling hawaiians that their queen is dead. And even though, Well listen hear Mr.White Tourist. The Queen may be dead. The Monarchy may be just a memory. The Hawaiian people may be few, but we still LIVE ON. Onipa`a and imua my hawaiians and local people.

Mr. White Tourist I protest to things that i know that are not true.I only protest when people slander things dear to my heart such as my culture. yes Kamehameha Schools do reject children based on their heritage and ethnicity not race and definately not the color of ones Skin. There are alot of children at Kamehameha schools that are hapa. You make it sound as if everyone on Oahu is allowed into Kamehameha school when they are not. It is not racism its preserving the hawaiian heritage. Even then Hundreds of Hawaiian children are rejected to have the privelege of saying that they are a Kamehameha Warrior. Princess Bernice Pauahi set up that school because the missionaries at the time had set up a school ONLY for their children, which was Punahou. Because of the founding of Punahou thus the reason of how Kamehameha school is set up. Again you can say that Hawaii is the most racist. And of course Hawaii will have racist I will not deny it because i have not met eveyone in the state to positively say eveyone is not. but racism will in every other place you go. Racism isnt in just one location. Racism is everywhere. And besides the fact of the matter in this thread is not about racism, Kamehameha school, “kill haole day” (which i only ever heard it happening ofthrough my uncle who is now 70), but it is about how Maui fever is a disgrace to the culture. How Maui fever depicts the locals as perv’s, whores, brainlesss beach bums that got nothing else to do but hook up with tourist, and as Laguna Beach wanna-be’s.

I have some thoughts about this…. First of all, STOP CALLING EVERYONE CAUCASIAN A HAOLE!! THAT IS VERY RACIST!! And Ha’ole doesn’t really mean foreigner, it means ha: to breathe, and ‘ole: not or without, ha’ole means with out the breath. When Capt. Cook came to Hawai’i, he did not have the breath (you know, Hawaiian) and he was ha’ole. Also, these “haoles” help Hawai’is Economy. It’s that little thing called, tourism, Yea, and everyone has their different interpetation of Hawai’i, but MTV’s is wrong. We don’t just party and hook up with people, also, it shows the people on the Mainland that there are only caucasians living in Hawai’i. I hope they have enough common sense to know that there are people with darker skin. I really hope the show gets cancelled or changed, like how about adding some locals, or doing something else on the show, it seems so planned out. People will actually watch something with out hot guys. And all you other people now, STOP CALLING US RACIST!! WE ARE NOT RACIST!! WE ARE PROTECTING AND PRESERVING OUR HAWAIIAN HERITAGE!! YOU ONLY SAY THINGS LIKE THAT BECAUSE YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND US AND OUR CULTURE! And trust me, you don’t really understand the culture if you don’t have the blood, or you haven’t lived here forever. If you don’t have those things, you really can’t understand and appreciate our culture. We are not mean, or discriminating, Hawaiians are friendly and loving. I find Hawaiians to be much more comfortable to be around. And stop thinking you know so much about us after watching a Polynesian show, or going to a Lu’au, or even studying or researching. But pretty much, stop the show, it’s very offensive to us. Most of us aren’t racist, we just try to protect our heritage. Unless you’re a local, you really don’t understand our culture as much as we do. We live it, and you just watch it.

    RACISM = BAD
    WORLD = BAD
    PEOPLE = BAD

Everyone hates each other for some reason. That’s the way our world has been lately. Hate Hate Hate, no Love Love Love. No one criticize me. We’re just too busy looking at the bad, to look at the good. We need to stop crying about the bad things, and do something about it. Stop crying, and go do something about it, Get the hell off your computer and do something. Work out, so we can solve the obseity problem. Not so sure about how we can get world peace, but crying on a message board isn’t going to do it. So goodbye, I’m off to plant a tree.

    Feb 12, 2007 at 2:27 pm

I would just like to speak for myself and my wife. We love Hawaii. We are white and live on the mainland but have a deep respect for the culture, the people and, most importantly the Aina of Hawaii. It pains me to see some of the things written in which people say that mainlanders should stay where they are, etc. As I said, I have the utmost of respect for the people of Hawaii and their culture. As a white person with not much culture of my own I feel blessed to be able to join in the festivities when the people of Hawaii share their culture with me. This is why a show like Maui Fever bothers me so much. And the people of Maui, as well as all Hawaiians (native, asian, white, etc - all Hawaiians) should not be portrayed in this manner by a corporate entity such as Viacom / MTV.

The Cancel Maui Fever petition was started by someone who, like me, is a mainlander who has deep respect for the culture and people. Please remember that there are some mainlanders out there that do care and do have respect for the Hawaiian culture and people. Maybe if we all consider that it is possible to respect eachother, and we show that respect, there will be no more racism and no more stupid shows like Maui Fever. Keep the aloha spirit strong - no matter who you are or where you are from!

  • To White Tourist, Wendell Nakamura, and MTV

First, haole does mean without breath, but mostly only offended caucasians are the ones who thinks it is a derogatory term. It is mainly used in the ‘foreigner’ sense, at least mostly by kupuna, and not meant to offend (you’d be offensive by telling them what it means because so many ignorant people and then telling them they can’t use it anymore because of the recipient’s misunderstanding of it.)

Why get offended by that? If I were to go to Fiji and was labeled their version of the word foreigner, I wouldn’t. You know why? It is because I WOULDN’T PRETEND TO KNOW ABOUT NATIVE-FIJIAN CULTURE BECAUSE I WAS NOT BORN AND RAISED AROUND NATIVE-FIJIAN CULTURE. There are idiots who use the term in other ways, but most of them aren’t Hawaiian anyway, just local (and by Hawaiian I mean the term native-Hawaiian, which is irritating to use because when I was growing up, everyone I know used the term Hawaiian when bloodline was within…now, mostly transplants loosely use the term like it means resident of state, i.e. Californian…these people would be termed haole because of their lack of understanding of local culture…or downright disrespect to Hawaiians by using this label and not caring what it means to others).

It seems like what you know about Hawaiian culture is from universities. Alot of them don’t know what they are talking about, they share the COMMON Hawaiian knowledge/history. Also, there are more fullbloods than just on Ni’ihau. Moloka’i has a large population…parts of Mau’i, and other islands do to. You know why you think otherwise? It is because not all have HAVE BIRTH CERTIFICATES, nor take part in the census.

In order to understand Hawaiian culture in more of it’s entirety, you have to be raised by the ‘traditional’ Hawaiian families that pass down knowledge of many customs THAT DON’T SHARE IT WITH OTHERS BUT THOSE DOWN THE BLOODLINE (THEY DON’T WANT THESE CUSTOMS EXPLOITED FOR MONEY.) IT IS NOT SOMETHING SPOKEN ABOUT MUCH…SO YOU MAY NOT KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT OR EVEN BELIEVE IT.

Fine by me, but this knowledge transfer still exists, and the information passed isn’t found in books/internet/taught at universities because it would rather be taken to the grave then taught to all (even though in actuality…it would only be exploited by FEW…but hey, I will follow kupuna wishes and keep quiet about what I’ve learned.)

Also, as somewhat of a sidenote, most bitterness newcomers receive when moving here is not the color of their skin, but most likely because they are residents of new sub-divisions (built on open land we care about and don’t wish to be developed), and un-affordably priced to locals. It’s not the newcomers fault, but our money hungry politicians who don’t listen to community outcries against new residential developments (our infrastructure can barely handle it’s current population, our fresh water supply is running low while the population here exponentially increasing, and urban sprawl is causing culture clashes in once-rural areas…all the while many longtime resident’s property taxes are skyrocketing because of bastard home flippers.)

    TO WENDELL NAKAMURA,

Native Hawaiians did not overthrow the queen, TRANSPLANTED HAOLE BUSINESS MEN DID (who posed as missionaries.) There was resistance, and petitions against this (by those of native blood). Many didn’t physically fight back because of the ‘presence’ of a military ship, so I agree the U.S. was not responsible.

HOWEVER, YOU SAY THERE WASN’T RESISTANCE BY HAWAIIANS WHEN THERE WAS AND STILL IS. THROUOUGHT TIME FROM THEN TILL KNOW, MANY HAWAIIANS (OF THE BLOOD) DECIDED TO USE THE NEW SYSTEM TO GAIN WESTERN KNOWLEDGE AND TRY TO GET BACK LAND THROUGH SAID SYSTEM. Also, although there was a statehood vote in ‘59, of the % of the vote for it, how many were NATIVE HAWAIIANS? What % did these native Hawaiians make up of all native Hawaiians? You would find that most Native Hawaiians were against statehood, but nobody cared because by then Native Hawaiians did not make up the majority of residents at the time, and money was more important to the majority than preserving resources.

THE PROBLEM WAS THESE PEOPLE (HAWAIIANS) DIDN’T REALLY START WITH MONEY, AND THOSE IN POWER ALREADY HAD IT BECAUSE THEY MADE IT ELSEWHERE IN REGIONS WHERE ECONOMIES WERE PRESENT. THOSE WHO OVERTHREW THE MONARCHY DID SO OUT OF GREED…THEY SAW THEY HAD A HEAD START OVER THOSE FROM HAWAI’I BECAUSE THEY KNEW MORE OF THE CONCEPTS OF BUSINESS THAN THOSE OF THE LAND.

JUST LOOK AT ALEXANDER AND BALDWIN, FOR EXAMPLE. THEY CONTROL THE WATER NOWADAYS (IT IS DIFFICULT FOR MANY TO START KALO FIELDS AS THEY WISH…POI AIN’T CHEAP YOU KNOW), BECAUSE A&B KNOWS THAT HE WHO CONTROLS THE WATER CONTROLS THE ISLANDS . Like I’ve said before, now the Hawaiian Islands are approaching a water crisis (http://www.uswaternews.com/archives/arcpolicy/2inlus5.html)

THEY ARE THE REAL CROOKS, NOT THE U.S., ALTHOUGH THE U.S. MILITARY IS MAKING THIS PLACE MORE AND MORE OF TARGET WITH MORE AND MORE MILITARY LAND DEVELOPMENT (25% OF OUR ‘AINA IS MILITARY CONTROLLED, THEY COULD TRAIN IN A PLACE THAT ISN’T THE ENDANGERED INDIGENOUS AND ENDEMIC PLANT CAPITAL OF THE NATION, BUT THEY CHOOSE NOT TOO…HENCE THE BITTERNESS BETWEEN U.S. MILITARY AND HAWAIIANS). Not saying kick the military out but give some of the land back. THIS LAND COULD BE USED TO PROPAGATE NATIVE FORESTS, SO MANY OF THE HAWAIIANS WHO DESIRE TO USE THESE PLANT MATERIALS FOR CULTURAL PURPOSES CAN DO SO (READ THE BOOK PLANTS IN HAWAIIAN CULTURE TO GET A GIST OF WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT.)

Obviously, what I just wrote about seems like a tangent to many of you, but these are issues on the minds of many Hawaiians and other locals everyday. IS THAT EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE TO WHAT THE SHOW IS ABOUT? I think I’ve made my point.

P.S. I am a full-blooded Hawaiian from Moloka’i, and I still live somewhat off the land here (can’t really do it on any of the other islands anymore because of a lack of native plants, open spaces, and declining fish stocks, and you have to FINANCIALLY survive as well, which is the BIG ONE.) Oh well, I guess it’s just paradise for rich haoles, and not true Hawaiians now. Do you guys finally get it? Clash of lifestyles, not skin colors!

P.S. I am a full-blooded Hawaiian from Moloka’i, and I still live somewhat off the land here (can’t really do it on any of the other islands anymore because of a lack of native plants, open spaces, and declining fish stocks, and you have to FINANCIALLY survive as well, which is the BIG ONE…you wonder why we’re all so angry?) Oh well, I guess it’s just paradise for rich haoles, and not true Hawaiians now. Do you guys finally get it? Clash of lifestyles, not skin colors! You are dead-on mark-smith.

    Feb 20, 2007 at 4:43 pm

The caps in my post are for EMPHASIS and not yelling.

    To White Tourist:

YOU GUYS SHOULD BE USING FINANCIAL RESOURCES FOR DISCOVERING NEW TALENT AROUND THE WORLD (JUDGING THE MUSIC WITH YOUR EARS AND NOT EYES), RATHER THAN ALL THIS PHONY MODEL WHINY REALITY CRAP. MAKE MTV 2 OR WHATEVER FOR THAT.

boy with da triple post … you get that. i know what you mean. I live on Oahu and I am half hawaiian. Its hard to get in touch with my roots over here but you know what I love my heritage and represent with pride. I’m tired of shows such as Maui fever that put the land that I live in to shame. I have family on every single island (except for kaho’olawe for obvious reasons) and it breaks my heart to see the land that I am from be slandered in such a disgraceful manner. Im tired of people, especially from the mainland, telling me to get over it and move on because you know what the hawaiians are trying to keep their roots and excel in today’s modern world but how can we move one when shows and other stereo types such as “Maui fever” continually show up and portray my family and my friends as perverts, sluts, and other derogatory depictions of our culture. Another thing that bothers me is that I can explain the outrage this show has caused until I am blue in the face, but if one is not from the islands or has never really lived the culure of hawaii then you will never truly know or comprehend what I am saying. aloha

the show is entertaining enough. they could have made this sort of show anywhere. i am white, i assume “haole” is a racist term. sounds like alkot of anti white racists in hawaii. i will say that from what i have seen on the show the island is a natural paradise of ocean and mountains combined. if u live there, good for you, u live in paradise, just stop the “hate whitey” stuff. its tired, played out, lame, all that. and chaunte has a GREAT butt in that thong. i mean, THAT is a perfect butt, no big “native” booty can top that. who wants a fat serna williams butt? i want chaunte, nice and trim.

EH!,which Maui was MTV thinking ’bout when they went develope the show??? The one in California?? HAH!? I speak a little hawaiian because my Aunty talks to me in hawaiian sometimes, but I’m not fluent. Yes they do teach hawaiian in schools. It’s just another language class that you can take like spanish and french well for public schools anyways. At Kamehameha School and Anueanue you have to speak hawaiian because at Kamehameha its a mandatory class and at Anueanue thats the only language your suppose to speak during class.

wah! its not the real hawaii. well, that is what real americans view hawaii and its people as a damn tourist attraction. if they were going to have a show about real hawaiins maybe they could film the kama’aina stealing other peoples stuff. because that seems to be your national pastime. getting your grubby skidmark hands on other peoples stuff. and enough with “they stole our land” cry about it. if it wasn’t for the haoles your asses would have been enslaved and bayoneted by the japs in ww2. you skidmarks owe us everything. how about this, we take oahu and the locals can have all the other islands. maybe you can re-install the monarchy and well see how long before your dumbasses revert to living in grass huts and praying to the freakin moon. your culture is a tourist attraction, people packing up and going to hawaii to see the savages. I hope a tsunami comes and kills you all.

first of all i dont give a damn what real americans view hawaii as..bcuz n e one is entitled to their on damn opinion.and no matter wat we say we cant turn back time and change things… but once u start calling the kamaaina skidmarks thats a personal blow to meeh and every other local*hayn or not*…. that reads ur post…. half of the ppl get offended by the term we use to describe foreingers *HAOLE* but it’s not meant to offend… but wen u call us skidmarks thats not fukn right…plus u accuse us “skidmarks” have a national pastime of stealing other ppl stuff well what can i say we learned from the best…*i’ll let u think about what i meant by that* and btw… as for ww2 that only reason we got bombed and such was because the *U.S MILITARY SHIPS WHERE STATIONED IN OUR HARBOR* that hit was meant for the UNITED STATES BCUZ THEY GOT INVOLVED IN THE WAR NOT “HAWAII”… if we werent overthrown and left alone there wouldve been a better chance of some other place on this damn earth getting hitt with those japz bombs!…with hawaii now..we prolly wouldve been better off with our grass huts and our aumakua but i’ll tell u this our culture might be a tourist attaction but we are far from savages…and as for that tsunami comment….why dont u come down to hawaii to a place called pupuole…say all the crap u jus sed behind ur computer screen…and we’ll see if that tsunami u want us to have will be as worse as the beating 2 soles can geev u….

the one thing this show has taught me, through the message boards anyway, is that hawai ‘i has serious raial issues. i really had no idea. the image of the islands is that it is paradise, plain and simple.the only thing i really knew about maui was that some powerful weed was groen there, right? the show itself is using the location to sell itself, but like i said before this show could have been shot anywhere in north america. take a clique of 20 somethings who like to party and watch them hook up. does anyone from hawai’i have a problem with the real world-hawai’i? think about it. the only native hawaiian was a total drunk and an overall freakazoid.

  • Chris
    Mar 4, 2007 at 6:09 pm

I don’t think you guys understand what locals mean by ‘native Hawaiian’.

A native-Hawaiian is an ‘indegenous Hawaiian’, a Polynesian, someone who’s ancestors were here before other nationalities. These guys live off the land, in tune with nature. There are conflicts because the modern life others want to live here require the clearing of native forests, usage of LIMITED water supplies, and living the modern life pollutes the island and nearby ocean ecosystem. True native Hawaiians live in a natural, subsistence way, and they can’t do it anymore because of the effects of everyone else’s modern lives.

The chick on the real world is Filipino. She is not native Hawaiian, she is a ‘local’.

Hawaiians still have to deal with land thieving because it is still happening even TODAY.

Read the article entitled ‘Broken Promises: “How Everyone is Getting Hawaiians’ Homelands Except Hawaiians.” Racist? Learn all about the history here from the many books out there and you will see why. Indigenous Hawaiians are on the verge of a revolution. They are fighting for their homeland (since many are being ‘priced-out’). I’m haole but am aware of what happened here (not talking about just the overthrow, but everything from even after that till today). I don’t blame the indigenous Hawaiians one bit because their land is still being exploited.

Do you see why we it’s not as simple as just ‘not watching the show’ if we don’t like it. MTV, whether intentionally or not, displays misperceptions about Hawai’i to continental U.S.’ers because it only shows a small snippet of who the people here are, and what life is really like for most. We have to deal with guys and girls coming here carrying those mis perceptions and condescending attitudes on a daily basis here because of shows like this. And yes, there was an outcry because of Real World Hawai’i.

See the mis perception in your last sentence, Patrick?

i think maui fever shouldnt be canceled. who cares if nevah have any locals on top. i think its just a show and that was the main point. jus what if locals made the show. then what? would there be a different point of view. for instance. locals are hard working people. would you like the film to show sugar cane people working, truck drivers driving, more local surfers. what would it come down too. till people are satisfied. to tell you the truth i jus cared that they didnt put any locals down. that was my concerned.

hey listen white people are not foreigners by any stretch of the imagination. in america, white people are the dominant race and if u havent noticed ur part of it now. u are blessed that we accepted u, so shut the f up. quit bit**** and grow up. u wouldnt survive a day in the states with that attitude. learn some respect of ur own! ur americans so are whites, blacks, greens, and yellows… and that is how life is on maui fever as it is in regular america thats why they made the show like that. ive been to hawaii, like it, never had a problem w it til i saw this.

To mike daniels for your little information we here in hawaii have alot of aloha to people of all races as long as they show the respect to us as they would want in return and by the way you we are lucky that you accept us umm you sure its like that many white people dont accept our people they look down on us and judge us so you are wrong in what you say you know nothing of our struggle to reclaim the land that was taken from us, the struggle to keep our culture alive and to just live life so mabe you should not speak of things you know nothing of so if you have a problem with hawaii now than go somewere else than dont project your un educated thoughts to people if you have nothing to back it up so if you dont like us than make your self happy and dont come here for you vaction for people who think like you do is why alot of people from the mainland is not liked here and I know alot of white people who love maui and would never think like you do

Maui Fever .. wat can i say..
the most STUPIDEST show ever made.
People dont act that way over here.. there is NO respect for our culture and for our people. Yeah, they consider themselves locals.. you grew up here and you grow up considering yourself hawaiian.. blah blah blah. Get over it, dont try to act disrespectful just because you want attention. Even if there are people who act that way, why choose them to represent the show.
You should’ve left your guys “show” on da mainland. The whole representation of our island is FAKE. And you guys wonder why all the people on da show is getting shit. Guys dont “randomly” hook up with tourists, or dump their girlfriend, and a minute later start making out with their ex. You dont know the real Maui.. or even the real Hawaii.
And for you tourist guy down there..
    you have NO RI
