Maui Residents Aren’t Fans of “Maui Fever”
Quite frankly, this goes along beautifully with what I said yesterday.
From the AP:
Some Maui residents are objecting to the latest MTV reality show, “Maui Fever,” saying its sexual content and all-white cast gives viewers a skewed impression of their island.
The first episode highlights a group of men who target tourists for fast, easy, and noncommittal hookups.
Previews for the eight-episode series - which airs on MTV Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. - hint at cheating, fighting, partying and hooking up. The first episode aired last week.
“I don’t want (tourists) to come to Maui and think that people are going to come up to their daughters, so `I better keep them away,’” Nathan Ugale, 16, who was born and raised in Lahaina told The Maui News. “It’s good for TV but not when it’s happening in the town that you live in, that you’ve been a part of your whole life.”
Read more after the jump.
Abcde Shibao, 16, also of Lahaina, said Maui residents come across as one-dimensional in the program.
“I thought it was kind of insulting. … They just show partying,” Abcde Shibao, 16, of Lahaina told the newspaper. “But (young people are) active in school, community and sports. We do other things besides partying.”
Other objections stem from how the show fails to represent the ethnic and cultural makeup of Maui.
The show’s seven main stars - two women and five men - are all Caucasian.
According to the 2000 census, Maui County is 31 percent Asian, 10 percent Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 22 percent mixed race. Caucasians account for 33 percent of the county, which includes the small islands of Lanai and Molokai along with Maui.

This haoles represent our island very well I think. Although we aren’t predominantly white, our culture is much about partying and hooking up as much as anything else. I drink, surf, and ho ok up twice a day. I’m not mad. Aloha!

Firstly let me say again that maui fever is a stupid and disgraceful show. Also, to everyone in here that keeps saying “its just a tv show get over it”. Well you obviously do not understand the life and culture in Hawaii. We do not want to be affiliated in any way to such disgraceful behavior that was portrayed on that show. When something deals with Hawaii it is personal to the true locals of Hawaii. And for those of you who said “the portrayal of how the people talk and the general feel of the island is right on” then you ovbiously do not understand or had even experienced the life of the land. The injustice and outrage that we feel does not only come from the pathetic attempt to portray Hawaii in any way, but the fact is that the cast doesn’t even understand Hawaii either. The most Hawaiian thing in that distatseful display of the Hawaiian culture is the location. I am tired of people telling me to “relaxe” “get over it” and “move on” because honestly to move on there needs to be some type of closure. How can anyone “move on” when our reputation is being slandered. In the work place when local Hawaiian people move to the states we are automatically labeled as racist, ignorant, lazy, and other negative concepts because of these shows in which you are telling us to “get over.” Futhermore, this show is no where near to portraying locals regardless of race. Locals can be by birh be Caucasion, African American, Native American, Asian or whatever the case may be and still be true locals. The true locals of Hawaii understand that concept. But what causes outrage is that Hawaii once again is being stepped on and kicked to the side. Except that this time it’s on our own aina. If MTV wants to attempt to replace their sorry excuse of a show Laguna Beach that provides drama I can find in my own classes at school then let them pick on another state because the people of Hawaii are tired of being portrayed as ignorant perverts and whores. Mahalo nui loa for your time. Aloha
a haole who hates the show

maui fever is a gross insult to all residents of hawaii. for native hawaiians, the show is so offensive that mere words cannot convey just how bad the show is. i am a local haole who is deeply disturbed by the inaccurate portrait of our islands. maui fever insults the culture and heritage of native hawaiians. that there are no hawaiians or local people on this show is disgraceful. even the haoles on maui fever are clearly FOB, arrogant and embarrassing. this delusional tv show should be canceled immediately and mtv should issue an on air apology to native hawaiians and acknowledge mtv’s cultural ignorance and insensitivity. mtv, you should be ashamed….. very ashamed. get this show off the air. NOW.

Can’t one of the bimbos/himbos go to UH-MCC? Then they would be “bimbo-lectuals.” It would be good for the college and good for the show.
Just a thought.

The people on the show are white, because real locals can’t even speak English. Watching hot white girls talk about sex is more interesting than watching real locals with no jobs, who can’t speak english sit around smoking weed, wearing nothing but “Locals” flip flops, and Maui Built board shorts.
Hawaiians are pretty much dirty Mexicans that like weed. Except Mexicans work hard. Hawaiians have the work ethic of a grub worm.
Hail Haole!!!

Maui Fever was a disgrace and I am so glad it is now off of the air! I have been to Maui and the people were great. They were locals and awesome to be around… I would go back in a heartbeat to see them again, but the people that Maui Fever portrays are like a parasite… all you do is try to get rid of the little buggers! I watched now and then just hoping it would get better. It never did. Aloha
