Frankie Abernathy of The Real World San Diego Unexpectedly Passes Away

June 12, 2007 by Shea Sylvia

FrankieWe here at MTV Reality World send our best to Frankie’s family.  This is really sad.

Frankie Abernathy, a cast member on The Real World: San Diego, died Saturday at her mother’s home in Shorewood, Wis. She was 25.

While no official cause of death has been determined, Abernathy had waged a lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis, a chronic lung disease.

Her death “was very sudden,” her mother, Abbie Hunter, told MTV News. “It still was kind of a shock, and it just wasn’t how we figured things would go. Itseems like her little body just gave out.”

During her 2004 stint on the MTV reality show, Abernathy struggled with the hereditary disease, which causes mucus buildup in the throat and digestive track.

A free-spirited punk-rock lover, Abernathy once said during her time in the Real World house: “Tomorrow is a privilege, so live today like tomorrow isn’t happening.”

Abernathy left the house early – she had problems with her roommates and missed her boyfriend. While on the show, she also intentionally cut herself with a kitchen knife. Her mother said her behavior helped raise awareness about cutting.

“I think she touched a lot of people and made an impact on a lot of people’s lives,” Hunter told MTV. “That’s what you want when you have a child – you hope they do that. I wish it had been in a different way, but I am proud of her.”

I can’t stand that people are glorifying this nit wits death, hello?!?! she smoked like a chimney and drank like a fish. What a horrible representative of cystic fibrosis. At least I’ll die knowing that maybe I didn’t help myself live but I didn’t help kill myself either.

  3. Sandi says:

Geez Ree - no need to call names. Show some respect to her family reading this. I am sure her family wishes she would have tried to live more healthier to last longer. For all we know, maybe she didn’t die from her cystic fibrosis…could have been something as crazy as a spider bite! Don’t judge.

  4. Ree says:

I can’t respect in death what I could not respect in life for an abundance of recklessness and stupidity with ones own life.

I am truely sorry to hear about Frankie’s Death I watched the Real world faithfully and was very touched by Frankie’s life and story in many ways she reminded me of my sister. She was a true fighter. But also a survivor but fight became to much. I remember one night when she was on the phone with her boyfriend she asked him to look at the moon while she looked upon it.I thought that was the sweetes thing I ever heard. She is at peace and I am glad she gave the world an oppturnity to get to know her she will forever remain in our hearts.Although she is no longer with us her quote will remain the most famous qoute on MTV ever.”I am too punk rock for this” Frankie lives forever….Rock on

i was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when i was a baby, and it really is a horrible disease. im 15 years old, and as frankie did, im living every single day like it’s my last. sure she drank, and smoked; but for living with CF, and not letting that ever stand in her way, i respect her, and i think all of you should as well.

if you don’t struggle with the disease; don’t go talking as if you have it, and telling us what we should/should not do if we have it. and don’t go making rude remarks about her. atleast she did something many people cease to do .. Live.

    65 roses. .
