The Real World Hollywood: Joey Goes to Rehab

by Shea on May 11th, 2008

Real World Hollywood Intervention

The trainwreck that is The Real World Hollywood had the biggest and baddest collision yet in the fourth episode.  The combination of Joey’s drunken craziness combined with Brianna’s trip back to Philadelphia to go to court on assault charges made for a highly charged and action-packed show.

First off, we saw Brianna stripping.  In what basically looks like the mobile home version of a strip club.  It’s the kind of scene that makes you want to grab her by the shoulders, look her straight in the eye and tell her that she can do so much better than that.  To hear her echo that same sentiment later in the show was a relief.  She knows that her life can be better and I find myself rooting her on.

Then… there’s Joey, who I know had to be cringing the entire time while watching this episode.  Let’s face it, we all look like jackasses when we’re drunk.  But this was exceptionally jackass-y.  And Joey knows that.  After a night out at the club followed by debauchery at home (like drinking an entire giant bottle of Dave’s white zinfandel - which, by the way, makes me think to myself, “WTF is Dave doing drinking a really cheap bottle of white zin?”) concludes with him punching the door, scaring the crap out of Sarah, Kim and Dave and finally calling the producers on the “emergency phone” to let them know that he wanted to leave the show.

To the producers’ credit, they talked him down from the ledge and offered to pay for him to go to rehab for 30 days (coincidentally the same treatment center that Dr. Drew Pinksy works at a la Celebrity Rehab).  On the other hand, it seemed abundantly clear that the producers felt they could get better ratings with Joey’s presence and thus wanted to help the kid get cleaned up so he could come back and entertain the viewers.

The bottom line is that this season is delivering in ways that we haven’t seen in a long time.  These kids are battling real demons and are experiencing things they’ve never imagined they could.  In the end, it makes for good TV, but I can only hope that they will be ok once the cameras stop rolling.

So tell me, what did you think of the latest episode of The Real World?

My husband and I were watching the rehab episode and my husband thought Joey was an ass*!#@. By the end of the show we were both crying for Joey. My husband said “I was wrong, he’s a good guy that just needs help.”

I was amazing to me how the two producers were instantly able to come joey down. Within a split second joey goes from a raging barbarian to a sincerely emotional person. How anyone can perceive this as real is beyond me. This show is and has been completely contrived.

    Joey,

Im glad you decided to leave the house and focus on yourself. In this world you only have yourself. You can only take care of yourself. Everyone there was only out for themselves. Im glad you step away from all the bs and realize that you are soo much more. I wish you the best of luck with your acting career and hopefully people in your same situation with come to terms with their issues.

Thank you Joey for being a wonderful inspiration!

I have seen Joey thoroughout the show and I have to say he is a very good person. The emotions he has is proof that he a kind hearted person and he is dealing with the past addiction. I have seen many people say very offensive comments about Joey. The roomates, when at the night club were not listening to him when he was refusing to drink and they just kept pushing him to do it. Eventhough Joey makes his own decisions but he was telling them to help him. The problem today is people do not take the other peoples word seriously…I wish I was on the Real World to give Joey the right support and to tell Joey that Jesus Christ Loves him and he doesnt have to hurt anymore. I have seen pure addicts find Christ and have the grace of God change their complete lives without any relapse or even a desire for any drugs or alcohol. I pray that this message gets to Joey that JESUS CHRIST LOVES YOU AND FOR YOU TO CONTACT ME. I PRAY FOR YOU AND I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT JESUS CHRIST CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING FOR YOU TO BE HAPPY! Thank you and God Bless.
